Award-winning reporter quits daily for second time

Tristan Nichols is welcomed to his new role at U-T TV by JR Mahon, director of news and programming.An award-winning regional daily reporter who was honoured for a series of reports from the frontline in Afghanistan has left journalism for a PR role.

Tristan Nichols, pictured left, has enjoyed two spells as defence reporter at Plymouth daily The Herald.

In 2012, he was named EDF Energy daily print journalist of the year in the South West for his reports from Helmand province where he was embedded with British troops.

The following year he quit the paper to move to Mexico to marry the girl of his dreams before landing a new job as a TV news anchor in California.

Tristan later returned to the UK with his new bride and resumed his old job at The Herald.

However he has now left the paper a second time to become public relations officer for The Royal British Legion.

Other recent job moves in the regional press include:

  • David McCann, deputy news editor at the Edinburgh Evening News, has left to become assistant news editor at the Daily Record.
  • Warrington Guardian crime reporter Matthew Hobbs has left the paper and is now freelancing as a broadcast journalist at BBC Breakfast after winning a place on the Journalism Talent Pool.
  • The Hertfordshire Mercury has appointed Gaby Bissett as a reporter. Gaby will be covering East Herts
  • Derek Bish as been appointed deputy group sports editor at the Express & Star and Shropshire Star. He was previously sports editor at the Bury Free Press, Haverhill Echo, Newmarket Journal, Suffolk Free Press and Diss Express.
  • Rachel Taylor has been appointed news editor at the Selby Times
  • Burton Mail reporter Matthew Cobb has left the newspaper to join the Cumberland News and News & Star, Carlisle.

    Would be interesting to know why such a good journalist quit the trade. Good luck to him.
