Student wins chance to report on Tour de France

A journalism graduate is gearing up to report on Yorkshire’s role in this year’s Tour de France, thanks to a new paid internship.

David Spereall, 21, pictured left, is benefiting from one of six new positions created by the Leeds Trinity University to provide paid employment opportunities for recent graduates.

This year’s Tour begins in Leeds on 5 July and is being viewed as a major media event in the county.

Now, as the university’s Le Grand Départ Officer,David will have responsibility for leading the reporting of the build-up to the Tour’s  Grand Départ on the  university’s Centre for Journalism hyperlocal news website www.ltjournalism.com.

Catherine O’Connor, Leeds Trinity University’s head of journalism, media and business, said:  “One of most important things for our journalism students is getting real-life experience and this website provides them with an excellent opportunity to get involved in this hugely exciting event.”

David, who achieved a 2:1 BA (Hons) journalism degree last year, said the role was superb preparation for his planned career in journalism.

He added: “Working with the students on the site has been really enjoyable and it’s great for them to get their work published online with their name on it.”
