Four new categories have been introduced as the annual O2 Media Awards for Yorkshire and the Humber are launched.

The awards, which are now in their eighth year, celebrate the best journalism in the region across print, television, radio and online organisations in 19 categories.

The new categories this year aim to recognise the top weekly journalist, best weekly sports writer and top TV or radio presenter, while there is also a new community journalism award where judges will look for examples of grass roots journalism which supports local communities.

Winners of the awards will be announced at a ceremony on 26 June.

Paul James, acting head of communications and reputation at O2 UK, said the judging panel never failed to be impressed by examples of community journalism across Yorkshire and the Humber.

He said: “The introduction of additional categories not only reflects the popularity of the awards but charts the changing face of media organisations.

“However we never lose sight of what’s at the heart of this event – the impact regional and community journalism has on its local communities and that’s why we are making this year’s categories even more inclusive.”

Work published between 2 May 2013 and 2 April 2014 is eligible to be entered in the awards, which remain free to enter. The deadline for entries is 25 April.
