Union urges journalists to hold minute’s silence

The UK’s biggest journalists’ union is calling for a minute’s silence to mark Workers’ Memorial Day on Monday.

The NUJ is urging all chapels to back the move to “commemorate journalists and media workers who have been killed in the course of their work.”

In just 10 weeks between January and mid-March 2014 around the world 16 journalists lost their lives, the union said.

It urged chapels to: “Observe a minute’s silence on Workers’ Memorial Day at noon, or at a suitable time, perhaps at the start of a morning production or editorial conference or, for broadcasters, after 11am news bulletins – and use the occasion to remind managers of their obligations.”

In the UK, it said, job cuts, excessive workloads and longer working hours throughout the media cause stress, strain and sleep disorders as well as increasing the risk of accidents.

Workers Memorial Day!!!!! What a load of ***** !Every day’s a memorial day for somebody – maybe it won’t be long before there’s a memorial day for the NUJ President (whatever she’s called) .

An excellent idea about which every editor should stand up to the management and endorse instead of going on about “lack of freedom of speech” in Kazakhstan or somewhere (and especially JP editors).
Ps. for all the big heads out there…the country’s name is spelled correctly.
