Students team up with weekly for new blog

Students will provide content for a regional weekly’s website as part of a new project.

The scheme will see University of Bedfordshire journalism students run a blog linked to Luton Today, the internet arm of the Luton News and the Herald & Post – featuring articles on news, sport, entertainment, lifestyle, reviews and opinions.

The LutonBlog scheme follows a similar link between the university and another Johnston Press title, the Milton Keynes Citizen.

It is hoped the experience will help the students secure jobs in the industry once they graduate, and some of the content will be featured on the Luton Today website.

Luton News editor Lynn Hughes said: “Depending on what the blogs are we’re going to dip in to it as and when we need to.

“It gives us more depth for the website.”

Jon Boyle, a journalism lecturer at University of Bedfordshire who himself previously served as a reporter at the Citizen, said: “It made sense to expand our little empire to Luton so the students here can gain experience of running a professional news website.

“The Luton students regularly produce excellent journalistic work so it’s fantastic that they now have a professionally-backed public website to showcase it.”

Third year student Liam Andrews, 21, will edit the blog.

He said: “I’m delighted the Luton News has agreed to become our partner as it enables us to work with local journalists in the business and get the students’ articles out there to the Luton public.“
