Regional daily to publish Sunday edition

The Yorkshire Post is to publish on a Sunday for only the second time in its history this weekend.

With the Tour de France due to get under way in Leeds tomorrow, YP journalists will be working through the day and night to put together a 40-page special souvenir edition.

The one-off edition focusing on tomorrow’s Grand Depart will be on sale at selected retailers throughout the county and at major Tour events.

A second 40-page souvenir, covering all the Tour events from ‘Le Big Weekend,’ will be published on Monday as a pull-out in the YP, Yorkshire Evening Post and Sheffield Star.

The only previous occasion on which the YP has published on a Sunday was on 7 September 1997 – the day after the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.

As reported HTFP earlier this week, the YP has already published three supplements in the run-up to the start of the race as well as launching a bid to turn the county yellow yesterday as part of a fund-raising campaign for air ambulance services in the county.

Managing editor Nicola Furbisher said: “We certainly can’t be accused of underplaying arguably the biggest sporting event to come to Yorkshire in recent history.

“It’s a tribute to the fantastic team we have here in Yorkshire that we’re going all out to make sure we bring these historic events to our readers.”

It’s a pity the start of Le Grand Depart could not be published in the Saturday edition of the Yorkshire Evening Post. Oh sorry, that was printed the night before. Not that they would tell their rapidly diminishing number of readers that. Instead, the more than decimated editorial workforce is forced to pull out all the stops to publish yesterday’s news tomorrow.

Well said Barbarossa. I am still shocked by the Grand Depart supplement, which I have in front of me. It doesn’t stand alone: no branding, which I thought a souvenir supplement would do. Cycling fans are not going to keep the entire paper. What a shame that the efforts of the remaining staff resulted in a poorly produced product. As I said in earlier posts, from page 10 onwards, all the ads should be free for error as they are split. If this were any other retail item, rather than a newspaper, purchasers could claim their money back. I wonder, has any management been out and bought a copy: seen the products as those that pay for them do. I’d advise it, or you won’t fully understand why you are losing readers so rapidly.

It’s interesting to see a newsroom shot of staff and banner when it’s the sort of picture that the Yorkshire Post would normally dismiss.

    Neglected,East Yorkshire

Did Nicola Furbisher mean ” selected retailers” in Leeds? Couldn’t find one copy in Hull, cycle capital of the North.

Now that’s what I call service — Nicola just tweeted me offering list of local retailers + arranging for sub dept to post copy on. Good old Yorkshire spirit !!
