Newspaper honours fallen with memorials montage

A regional daily used a montage of war memorials around its patch to create a special front page for Armistice Day.

Tuesday’s edition of the South Wales Argus carried the words ‘Lest We Forget’, with the letters created by using a montage of pictures of war memorials from around its circulation area.

Editor Kevin Ward said: “We came up with the idea while we were planning our First World War centenary coverage at the start of the year. Since then, our photographers have been taking pictures of war memorials from across Gwent.

“I’m very pleased with the final result and we have had lots of positive feedback about it from readers on the phone, email and social media.”

The paper’s coverage of the centenary has already included a 48-page special supplement entitled Gwent’s Great War, published exactly 100 years after Britain declared war on Germany.

It featured readers’ family stories and articles from the Argus archive.

A quarter of the supplement’s sponsorship revenue was donated to the Royal British Legion, meaning this year’s Gwent Poppy Appeal was launched with a £3,200 donation from the Argus.

The Argus is also re-publishing every day the paper’s original war reports 100 years to the day they were first published.

It’s a nice idea but sadly it doesn’t work because it’s difficult to read

This is not my idea of a montage, and as Reporter points out, it is difficult to read, even on the white, which is very stark.

Shame the editor felt it necessary to put the front page out on social media at 11.01am on Tuesday.
