Former Lib Dem PR man to edit London weeklies

Archant North London has appointed Matt Withers as the new editor of the Islington Gazette and the Hackney Gazette.

After gaining three straight ‘A’s at A Level at South Cheshire College, and graduating from the University of Sheffield with a 2:1 BA (Hons) in German and Politics, Matt began his journalistic career as a trainee reporter on the Liverpool Echo.

From the Echo, he moved on to become a reporter on the Daily Post Wales, and in 2002 he won Guardian Student Feature Writer of the Year.

In 2005 he landed a job as a senior reporter, then political correspondent, and then deputy news editor on Wales on Sunday.

From there he became political correspondent, and then assistant head of content for Media Wales.

In 2011 Matt became Senedd correspondent for the National Assembly of Wales, and after that went on to become the Media and PR Officer for the Liberal Democrats in London.

March this year saw Matt become executive editor (Digital) for Archant in London, before being promoted to his current position.

Matt can be found tweeting at @mattwithers.

When he isn’t working, Tony Hancock fan Matt enjoys football and is a Crewe Alexandra supporter.

He also enjoys playing darts, cooking, and reading political biographies.

It’s good to know his A-level results. Please could HTFP make this a style point for anybody else they feature? I’ll start – six GSCEs, three A-levels grades B to C. No degree, but I’ve completed the NCE.

Good to hear about those A level results. What about the GCSEs?

Can I mention my Royal Society of Arts ordinary level certificate in English literature? And, oh, I almost forgot…I’ve just received a diploma for successfully completing an eight-week rehab course following a heart op. Then there’s my commemorative shield for giving a speech at a police conference, not forgetting my 114wpm Pitman shorthand certificate and – best of all – my plastic cup for coming second in my school’s ‘throwing the cricket ball’ competition in 1956. I also won a copper jug at a tombola night in Scunthorpe and was given a participant’s badge for failing to complete a charity walk across the Somerset Levels. And did I mention…etc, etc, etc, ad infinitum, endless bunkum, my cub badge for bird-spotting? Thought not. However…

I got my cycling proficiency and life-savers badge at school. Must add it to my CV.

Could this post be the same one that was declared redundant just a few short years ago? Blimey, if they carry on at this rate, Archant London will be right back where it was 15 years ago – without the readers, revenue or first rate staff, of course. To paraphrase a well-known football chant, it seems they really don’t know what they’re doing.
