Name change for Newsquest-owned weekly

A free weekly newspaper in North London has changed its name in a bid to focus closely on its core patch.

The Newsquest-owned Haringey Independent will now be known as the Tottenham & Wood Green Independent.

The title had a free distribution of 18,154 according to the most recent ABC figures publised in February.

The paper explained the thinking behind the change in a story on its website.

It read:  “Readers will have notice a change to this week’s paper – The Haringey Independent has changed its name to the Tottenham and Wood Green Independent.

“The new name has been chosen to reflect the core areas covered by the paper and reflects our desire to be the paper and website Tottenham and Wood Green people turn to for breaking news and community stories.

“Despite the name change, the Independent and its website will continue to cover stories from across the borough, from Highgate and Muswell Hill to the River Lea and from Tottenham down to Harringay.”

I remember when it was called the Haringey Independent about ten years ago. Then it became two papers: the Tottenham & Wood Green Independent and the Muswell Hill… Times was it (?) to focus on the two different areas for advertising purposes (they are quite different to be fair). Then it became the Haringey Independent again. And now, it seems, it is becoming the the Tottenham & Wood Green Independent again. What’s the betting on another name change in about five years’ time (if it’s still around)?
