Local World MD to head mystery Wales project

A senior manager with regional publisher Local World is moving from his role to head up what the company is calling “a major Welsh-wide development project.”

Tony Dowling is stepping down as managing director of LW’s South West Wales Media Group, which includes the South Wales Evening Post, Llanelli Star and other sister titles.

The company said in a press statement that Tony was stepping down “to pursue a major Welsh wide development project for Local World.”

In his new role, Tony will report directly to Local World group chief executive David Montgomery. No further details of the project have been released

Said Tony: “This is a hugely exciting opportunity for Local World in Wales.

“As I take up this new role. I want to thank all the teams within SWW Media for their hard work over the last couple of years. They are a great team and brilliantly placed for a great future.”

Tony’s successor will be Mark Sainsbury, who has been appointed Managing Director for the South West Wales Media Group in addition to his existing role as Managing Director for Devon & Cornwall Media.

Said Mark: “I am really looking forward to working with the teams in Swansea, Carmarthen and Llanelli. After living in Swansea for 5 years, I know the area, customers and the titles extremely well. I can’t wait to get started.”

Both Tony and Mark will take up their new roles with immediate effect.

All of us in the South West have found it fantastical that Mark has come back into the business and employed the same techniques and approach to business which made his contribution so memorable last time he was here. Local World are showing their understanding of the business with this amazing promotion for him. Well done Mark!

Interesting given TM’s strong (ish) position in Cardiff, Valleys and North Wales and their 20% shareholding in LW !

Worried glances in Newport ? ( I Doubt it )

And, lest we forget, the WMN on Sunday’s Power 150 ranked Mark the third most powerful individual in the Westcountry even before this promotion. This must put him up there with the PM!

…..and I am sure it’s the massive sales success story of the WMN on Sunday which has led to Mark’s promotion!

Welsh-wide? As in nationalwide? Such a refreshing change from the proper words. Adjective? Noun? What’s one of them when it’s at home? Who cares? Even the time-hallowed rules of English (or should that be England?) grammar must leap aside or be ground into the mire by the runaway locomotive of transformative change that is Local World senior management on its mission of perpetual revolution (going forward, it’s hardly necessary to add).
