Journalism student wins memorial award

A journalism student has won a prestigious annual award made in memory of a Scottish daily journalist who died aged 31.

Calum Macdonald died from cancer in 2008 having worked for all three major Glasgow daily titles – the Evening Times, the Daily Record and finally The Herald – in the course of a ten-year newspaper career.

An annual award designed to recognise investigative journalism published in a college or university newspaper was later set up in his memory.

This year’s prize, announced at this week’s Scottish Student Journalism Awards, has been won by Glasgow Clyde College student Ruth Mackenzie, pictured below.

Another Glasgow Clyde student, Sean Murphy, was commended in the Calum Macdonald Memorial Award.

I’m not knocking the award, but why is it so ‘prestigious’? As a former boss of mine said: You can’t kid a kidder.
