Editor steps up to MD in Trinity Mirror changes

Regional publisher Trinity Mirror has announced two new senior appointments to lead its titles in Scotland and North-East England.

Media Scotland, the publisher’s Scottish division, has appointed current editor-in-chief Allan Rennie as managing director.

He retains his current responsibilities as editor in chief and takes up his expanded role with immediate effect.

Trinity Mirror has also appointed Russell Borthwick as managing director in the North-East and he will take full responsibility for the publishing businesses in Newcastle and Teesside.

Allan and Russell will be replacing Denise West, currently managing director of both Media Scotland and Trinity Mirror North East, who is leaving the business after 17 years with the company.

Mark Hollinshead, Trinity Mirror’s chief operating officer, said: “I am delighted to announce that Allan has been promoted to this role as he is one of the country’s most experienced media executives.

“It’s an exciting time for Media Scotland – in the last year we launched new titles and our digital growth has been impressive.

“Media Scotland has established itself as the country’s leading multi-platform publisher and under Allan’s stewardship I am confident our audience reach will grow still further.”

Russell, who takes up his role in March, is an established business leader in the North-East having set up and run Press Ahead, an award-winning agency with a roster of high-profile clients.

“Russell has a wealth of experience in publishing and through the success of his own business he has built up a extensive client base in the north-east and beyond,” added Mark.

“Russell is a great leader and a strong addition to the management team.”

“Denise has established an exemplary track record of performance and delivery in her varied career with the company but has now decided to leave to pursue fresh challenges. We wish her every success for the future,” said Mark.

Two good appointments, in my opinion, Russell in particular. He knows Trinity Mirror’s products and people, he really knows the North East market and he has great drive. I bet he’ll hit the ground running.
