Editor-in-chief of London weeklies to step down

A weekly news chief who has spent 45 years in the industry – 35 of them as an editor – is to step down from his role next month.

Malcolm Starbrook became editor of the East London Advertiser in 2005, returning to the paper he first joined as a trainee in 1969.

He went on to add the Hackney Gazette and Docklands and Newham Recorder to his portfolio as editor-in-chief of Archant’s East London and Essex titles.

Malcolm, pictured left, will leave the company on 25 July.

Malcolm was first appointed as an editor 35 years ago and went on to own and eventually sell his own newspaper in Milton Keynes.

He was a member of the Press Complaints Commission for six years and was appointed as a Freeman of the City of London in 1985.

Archant London editorial director, Laura Adams, said: “During the last year, Malcolm has taken a strategic role overseeing key projects such as the Olympic legacy, Jack the Ripper and Sports Review supplements.

“He has also been in charge of the production hub, sports team and commercial features team as well as overseeing the news teams in Ilford. Malcolm has steered the editorial teams through many different changes as we have sought to respond to a challenging industry.

“Malcolm will be sorely missed in London and has been a great support to me during the last few years, particularly in his strategic role.

“He has been a committed and loyal employee of Archant and we remain grateful for his hard work and dedication.”

One of the best Editiors in the business.
Loyal, helpful and an impressive newspaper designer.
Only problem, he never gave me enough by-lines … but I’ve forgiven him for that.
    Enjoy your retirement.

They seem to have been a bit slow off the mark with their Jack the Ripper supplement. I can’t remember when he was last on Crimewatch.
