Regional editor in drive for £1m public artwork

A regional newspaper editor has joined a team dedicated to bringing a new £1m piece of public art to England’s second city.

The Birmingham Big Art Project is a Birmingham Civic Society initiative supported by the city council.

A steering group including Birmingham Post editor Stacey Barnfield and Central TV anchor Bob Warman has been formed to play a part in commissioning the piece.

The panel is tasked with raising funds, appointing a commissioning agent, finding a shortlist of artists and running a competition to select the winning entry.

Members include a range of high profile figures from the public and private sector, including Lord Mayor of Birmingham, councillor Mike Leddy, who will act as lead fundraiser, and chairman of Pertemps Tim Watts.

The Civic Society said funding appeals will be made to the Arts Council, philanthropists and businesses in the region. All supporters will have the option of contributing.
