Local World aims for ‘world class mobile product’

Regional publisher Local World has announced the appointment of a new digital product director with a brief to deliver a “world class mobile product.”

Mike Goldsmith, left, previously head of content strategy, mobile for Future plc, takes up the role with immediate effect.

Local World said in an announcement this morning that Mike “will have an initial special remit to deliver a world class mobile product.”

Digital director Matt Kelly said: “I’m delighted to have Mike on the team. Mike has a great deal of expertise in delivering quality digital products, particularly across mobile and tablet, having led the Future Plc app strategy for several years.”

In his previous role at Future plc, Mike was responsible for identifying publishing opportunities and developing innovation programmes for phone and tablet.

Commenting on his appointment, Mike said: “Having great local brands and content is central to strong mobile businesses. Local World is in a great position to deliver that and I’m thrilled to be joining at such an exciting time.”

Fantastic news for us Local Worlders out here in the provinces. Does this mean we might now be given mobile devices to actually do our jobs properly and, ultimately, view these “world class” mobile “products”?

The fact that they constantly refer to ideas in terms of bland generic wooly language such as ‘mobile product’ means they will never produce anything remotely relevant.
