ITN to stage debate on ‘rewriting history’ row

Broadcaster ITN is to stage a debate over whether the ‘right to be forgotten’ is compatible with journalism.

Recent days have seen hundreds of national and regional newspaper stories removed from Google searches following a European Court ruling.

ITN is to hold a debate on data protection issues in conjunction with the Media Society, with Alastair Stewart chairing the panel.

It will aim to explore what the organisers termed “the shifting data protection regime and examine the repercussions for journalism, online news archives and a true account of history.”

As well as the ‘right to be forgotten,’ the debate will also cover the implications of the European Parliament’s decision to remove journalistic exemptions from Article 80 of the draft EU Data Protection Regulations, eroding long-established protections relating to journalistic freedoms.

The debate will take place at ITN’s offices in Gray’s Inn Road, London on 14 July.
