Editor of union magazine bids to retain post

Campaigning is under way to find the next editor of the magazine representing the biggest journalists’ union in the UK.

And first out of the blocks for the post at The Journalist is incumbent news chief Christine Buckley, pictured.

In the top chair for the last five years, the former Times industrial editor is keen to continue her radical transformation of the six-times-a-year National Union of Journalists’ publication.

The latest readers’ survey, conducted in 2012, showed that 85 per cent of those polled liked the news content and 63 per cent liked the features and 81 per cent liked the design and lay-out.

Admitting that union membership generally, as well as in the NUJ, is in decline, Christine believes in recruiting “new and enthusiastic members who are going to stay, not just join while they have trouble at work.”

She added: “I have tried to raise the standards of The Journalist to make it a publication that a journalists’ union can be proud of. I would love your vote to continue that.” The election is next month.

The NUJ magazine is a complete joke and it would serve members better if the whole idea of it was spiked. It is locked in the past with the age of the average contributor being about 90: a recent issue was still bemoaning Murdoch’s move to Wapping more than 30 years after the event, for God’s sake. The Thatcher era was completely done and dusted by the time those people now coming into the industry were even born. I bin it as soon as it turns up.
