Top aviation award for former regional reporter

A former weekly news reporter is flying high after winning one of the most prestigious accolades in the world of aviation.

Patrick Malone, who began his career on the Berwick Advertiser in 1970, received the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators’ Award for Aviation Journalism during a ceremony at London’s Guildhall.

The award recognises his promotion of aviation in all its forms and is considered the pre-eminent accolade in aviation journalism, coming from the primary organisation of professional and test pilots at the English-speaking world.

Patrick, who has worked on several weekly and evening newspapers in southern England, was news editor of the Mail on Sunday before starting a publishing company specialising in aviation titles.

A pilot since 1984, he qualified as a helicopter instructor in 1998 and has flown his own aircraft as far afield as Armenia and Niger.

He remains involved with Fleet Street as motorcycle correspondent of the Sunday Times.
