Sunday title launches new magazine-style app

A Scottish Sunday title has launched a new magazine-style app to allow people to access archived features along with new content.

The Sunday Herald has created the free app, which is currently just available for iPads, to provide users with features content, which will be divided into sections, such as music and film.

Its title page featured an exclusive picture by Scottish photographer Albert Watson, which will be used for a publicity poster for the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of a vampire drama.

The newspaper has released the monthly app, which has been sponsored by ScotRail, on a trial basis but there are plans to develop an Android version if it is successful.

The new app will complement The Herald’s existing news app, which is available on Apple and Android devices to its subscribers.

It also includes restaurant reviews, recipes and travel, along with directories of Scottish fashion designers, film directors, authors and musicians

Plans for the Sunday Herald Life app were revealed by editor Richard Walker who spoke to students at Edinburgh Napier University’s Media Mondays series in January.

Speaking at the event, Richard said: “I would say that print is not dead but has some serious problems. For me it doesn’t really matter how people consume our journalism, what platform they use, as long as they consume our journalism.

“What it is not is a news app because there are already news apps and we already have a website that supplies news.

“This is a magazine-type app that deals with out feature content. It is content in some cases that we have had for a while that will be in our achives and we would have different sections of the app, like music and film.”

It can be downloaded from the App Store.
