Sporting stars turn out to remember top writer

Greats from the world of sport gathered in London for an evening celebrating the life of a national sportswriter who started out on his local paper.

Frank Keating, who wrote for The Guardian for more than four decades, died in January aged 75.

Hereford-born Frank started out on the Hereford Times before moving onto Thames Television and then The Guardian.

The tribute evening, at the University of London, was organised by friend and colleague Matthew Engel with Graham Gooch, Mike Atherton, Eddie Butler and Mike Selvey among the panellists.

During his career Frank interviewed many of the greats from the world of cricket, rugby, football and athletics – a number of whom attended the evening.

Clips were shown from Frank’s days presenting Maestro for Thames when his interviewees included Bobby Charlton, Daley Thompson, Nigel Mansell, Ian Botham, Colin Cowdrey, Mary Peters and Bobby Moore.
