Regional daily’s WW1 centenary website goes live

A regional daily has launched a website about the First World War ahead of next year’s 100th anniversary of the conflict.

The Northern Echo has launched the site to commemorate the centenary of the start of the war, which will be marked with events across the UK next year.

The website highlights the contribution of the North-East to the conflict and includes stories of heroism and sacrifice by people in the region.

Tales of bravery by local people will also feature in the Echo’s Weekend Memories section in each Saturday’s edition.

Editor Peter Barron tweeted: “To mark the 100th anniversary of World War One, we’ve dedicated a website to the North-East’s role in the conflict.

“Our aim is for the site to grow into a unique record of how the region contributed to the war effort.”

The site has sections for veteran’s stories, Victoria Cross recipients, photos from the time and a section for each of the main towns in the paper’s patch.

The title aims to add new content to the site each week in the run-up to the centenary.
