Ousted editor takes subbing role with weekly

An editor who lost his job in a restructure despite posting a 2.1pc sales rise has joined another title in a temporary subbing role.

Jon Stokoe was made redundant from the Whitby Gazette in April with paper now coming under Scarborough News boss Ed Asquith.

A Twitter campaign to save his role was unsuccessful and Jon has now taken on a four-month contract as a sub-editor at Local World-owned weekly the Lincolnshire Echo

He will also be writing a column for the Whitby Mag from its second edition, due out next month.

Jon had been due to join the new independent magazine in time for its launch last month, but was prevented from doing so by the terms of a “compromise agreement” with the Gazette’s owners Johnston Press.

His role at Lincoln, which is covering a period of maternity leave for another staff member, is due to come to an end in November, although Jon says he is “hopeful” it may be extended.

Jon was editor of the Gazette for two years and was acting editor of the title for 18 months previous to that.

In the second half of 2012, the paper became only one of 13 paid-for weekly titles across the UK to record a year-on-year sales increase.
