Journalists set to walk through fire for charity

Journalists from two weekly papers are preparing to literally walk through fire to raise cash for charity.

Dan Whiteway, aged 22, from the Royal Borough Observer, and Hannah Shroot, 25, from the Slough and South Bucks Observer, have signed up for a firewalk in aid of local causes.

The pair, along with Tameena Hussain, IT assistant at the papers’ parent company Berkshire Media Group, will take part in the event tomorrow (Saturday) to raise money for two seven-year-olds suffering from cerebral palsy.

Dan said he and Hannah had been speaking to the families of Ethan Quinn, from Burnham, and Vivi Gregory-Osbourne of Windsor, for almost a year and wanted to do something to help.

“This is something I’ve certainly never done before and there is nothing you can really do to prepare yourself for it. It’s certainly a bit scary,” he said.

“But, ultimately, this is to help out two children who are far braver than we are for just taking part in the firewalk. Vivi and Ethan have been through so much and always been so courageous and positive.”

Vivi had a selective dorsal  rhizotomy operation in October last year, while Ethan is still fundraising for his. Both youngsters also needing funding to pay for years of physiotherapy after the operations.

Fantastic to see my old friend Dan Whiteway showing the helpful nature that exists in most regional hacks. He is a great guy and I wish I could be there to watch as those Reading feet burn!
