‘Good news’ freesheet set to increase pagination

The publisher of a new freesheet which claims to be the UK’s first “good news only” regional newspaper is planning to increase its pagination saying the positive feedback has been overwhelming.

Launched this autumn, The Bradfordian is a fortnightly publication circulated around 55,000 homes and businesses in Bradford which only reports what it regards as positive news stories.

Pagination for the freesheet is currently 32 pages but publishing director Naz Hussain want to increase the newspaper’s size to 48 pages in the near future.

Speaking to HTFP, Naz, who previously worked at Bradford’s Telegraph & Argus for 10 years, says he has been taken back by the positive response from the local community.

Said Naz:  “The positive feedback from businesses, organisations, the council, has been absolutely overwhelming.

“The newspaper is about community spirit and highlighting all the positive things which go on in the city. A lot of people say they are sick of all the bad news and every city should have a newspaper like this.”

While the new publication concentrates on championing local good news stories, it also devotes a couple of pages to national and international news.

“One of our reporters has been getting emails every 10 minutes from people who want to publicise all the good things going on at grass roots level,” added Naz.

Addressing readers in his debut column, Naz told readers that he wants to promote the many uplifting features which Bradford has to offer and believes everybody can benefit from good news.

“We believe that Bradford, like any city, has issues and problems and at the same time, like any city, has a core of dedicated upright, law-abiding and righteous citizens whom, whilst on the face of it carry on with their daily lives seemingly oblivious, actually care about their city and wish to see only positive outcomes,” he wrote.

“Perhaps by championing this silent minority, we can highlight how much Bradford has to offer and despite the often deafening cries of the doom-sayers, this great city still has so much going for it.”

The Bradfordian website is also up and running and readers can view a digital version of the latest edition as well as previous publications.

Whilst I’m happy to hear of the paper’s sucess, in Derbyshire over fifteen years ago we had a ‘Good News’ paper called The Dales Echo, which ran for almost two years.
Sadly, we had a blinkered bank roller who hadn’t the balls to let us carry on, just as we were starting to get somewhere.

I think all papers should not just print only good-news stories but also go back and airbrush out all the bad-news ones too.
