Former regional sports editor in launch of digital mag

A former regional press sports editor has become the editor of a new weekly digital sports magazine which was launched last Thursday.

Sports Wk is a digital sports title which aims to collate the best stories and opinions from national newspapers and social media, combining them with original features for sports fans.

The new title will be edited by Kevin Affleck, who has worked as deputy sports editor at the Watford Observer and sports editor for Local World titles in Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes and Northampton.

The 40-page magazine is available from the Apple Newsstand and from the Sports Wk website each Thursday for iPad and Android and will initially be free to download.

One of the founders, Dan Churchward, who has previously worked at the Financial Times, Racing Post and the Daily Telegraph, said: “Sports Wk offers sports fans with no time on their hands the ability to keep up to speed each week on the best stories with the best coverage that have happened across UK sport.

“Whether it be football, cricket or darts, if it’s newsworthy we’ll cover it.”

Kevin worked at the Watford Observer between 2001 and 2008 and won a number of awards during that time, before moving to work for The National in Abu Dhabi for four years, where he was deputy sports editor.

He returned to the UK to take up a position as sports editor for Local World titles, which used to be part of Iliffe News and Media, between October last year and March this year.

The new magazine aims to secure 40,000 subscribers by its fifth year.
