‘Angry’ journalists celebrate new title launch

A weekly editor has admitted that “anger” towards a rival publisher helped spur her team towards the launch of a new weekly title today.

As first reported on HoldtheFrontPage this week, Tindle Newspapers has launched the Gloucester Review in opposition to Local World-owned daily The Citizen.

It follows The Citizen’s decision to launch a weekly edition in the Forest of Dean in competition with The Forester, which LW’s predecessor Northcliffe Media sold to Tindle two years ago.

Forester editor Viv Hargreaves, who masterminded the editorial side of the launch, made no attempt to hide her feelings about the nascent circulation battle.

“We were angry. They sold us and now they are attacking us so what do you expect staff to feel?” she said.

Viv was praised along with Forester managing director Attracta Astley for their “rapid response” to the Forest Citizen’s launch last week.

A Tindle Newspapers executive said:  “It was a masterpiece of organisation and editorial, advertising and publishing skills.

“A brilliant job started and finished in eight days – and all by the management and staff in the Forest of Dean. We knew they could do it and we’re proud of them.”

The new 24-page paper has a print run of 10,000 and will be distributed in Gloucester city centre on Fridays.

Local World has previously declined to comment on the issue.
