Photographer’s work showcased at new exhibition

A freelance press photographer is showcasing his best work from the late 1970s at a new exhibition.

Brian Averell, who worked at the Lennox Herald for 34 years, is exhibiting his collection of photographs from 1979 at the Community Hub at the Artizan Shopping Centre in Dumbarton.

His collection captures Margaret Thatcher in the year she came to power and a young Tony Blair before he became Prime Minister, as well sports events, school life and charity events.

Brian picked 1979 as it was the first full year that he and former business partner Dave Mitchell worked as freelancers.

“It’s nice to see so many of the pictures on display, a lot of them have been forgotten about until now, I’ve had lots of people say that they recognise family members on the pictures,” he told HTFP.

Brian, who has been behind the lens for more than four decades, also produced a book in 2006 called ‘Farewell to the Seventies’ which documents events throughout 1979 in around 80 black and white photographs and is hoping to set up a website for his pictures in the near future.
