FoI reveals £100k of fines for charity shop parkers

A weekly newspaper scored a Fredom of Information victory after revealing drivers dropping off donations to a London charity shop have been fined more than £100,000 in parking tickets over the last year.

Islington Tribune reporter Charlotte Latimer made the FoI request to Transport for London which showed it had made £101,062 from the four bays outside a Marie Curie shop in Highbury, North London.

The investigation found that 1,740 parking tickets were issued to drivers stopping outside the shop on St Paul’s Road between 13 August 2012 and 13 August 2013.

Charlotte also interviewed John Gilbert, Lib Dem councillor for Highbury East, who had been fined while dropping off bags at the Marie Curie shop.

“I do think it’s most unfair that Transport for London are so aggressive in enforcing parking restrictions here when many of the people they fine are helping the charity by using the shop or donating goods to be sold there,” he said.

non story, there will be loads of other shops nearby so doubt very much if every single person fined was dropping off donations. Let’s face it, it’s a 10 second job to walk from the car drop a bag and back to the car.
