First-ever Photographers’ Council launched by NUJ

A dedicated Photographers’ Council has been launched by the National Union of Journalists in a bid to improve representation for photojournalists and videojournalists.

The nationally-elected council will be made up of working journalists and will be the first ever arm of the NUJ to be tasked solely with looking after the interests of lens-based reporters.

It is expected to have four meetings a year, some of which will be done via video-conferencing, with the others likely to be held at the NUJ headquarters at Kings Cross, London.

Nominations to stand on the council are now open.  For more information about the positions up for grabs, e-mail: nick@nml.uk.com

What the hell is a “lens-based reporter”? Is that the new name for a journalist given a cheap point-and-shoot compact who gets sent out to take pictures because all the staff togs have been let go in a money saving excercise?

The new council is aimed at NUJ members who are primarily lens-based journalists, ie. photographers or photojournalists and videographers/videojournalists.

The Photographers Council will cover both staff and freelance lens-based journalists within the NUJ. The majority of photographers in the NUJ are now freelance rather than salaried staff, even if most of their work is used by newspapers.

But NUJ photographers and videographers working in other sectors are also covered by and eligible to stand for the council, such as those working in broadcasting, magazines and books, new media, and public relations. The NUJ welcomes media professionals including writers from all these areas.
