Weekly news chief leaves to take up regional daily role

A news chief for two weekly newspapers in London has left to take up a role at a regional daily in Wales

Matthew Knowles, left, was assistant editor at the Croydon Guardian and Sutton Guardian but has now joined Newsquest sister title the South Wales Argus in the same role.

Matthew, who will combine the role with that of head of content, started work at the Newport-based Argus yesterday, with Sutton Guardian chief reporter Matt Watts taking over his position in London.

He tweeted about his move last week from his @CroydonSuttonEd account saying: “My final week at helm of Croydon and Sutton Guardian newspapers so if I owe you a favour it’s your final chance to cash it in.

“My Sutton chief reporter is taking over as me as I am off to the South Wales Argus as asst ed/head of content.”

Last Friday, he added: “So farewell Croydon and Sutton. It’s been a blast. Thanks for all the good times and the presents. Next stop Wales.”

Matthew has worked at the Guardian titles for a number of years and started out in journalism as a trainee reporter at Leighton Buzzard on Sunday, part of the Bedfordshire on Sunday group.
