South West editor to switch titles

The editor who oversaw the Torquay Herald Express’s transition to weekly publication last year is to become editor of another daily-turned-weekly title.

Andy Phelan was today named as the new editor of the Express and Echo, Exeter.

He replaces Marc Astley, who announced his departure from the Northcliffe Media-owned title before Christmas after six years in the chair.

Andy has presided over what the company claims is 47pc increase in readership since turning the Herald Express weekly on 21 July 2011.

Andrew Blair, managing director of Northcliffe’s South West Media Group said :  “I am delighted to welcome such a high calibre journalist and experienced editor to the Exeter business.

“The Express & Echo, as Exeter’s leading medium, operates in a vibrant growing city which rightly demands a lot from its local paper. I very much look forward to Andy being able to add a powerful new dimension to our business here.”

Jim Parker, deputy editor of the Torquay Herald Express, will assume responsibility for that title until a permanent successor to Andy is appointed.

Andy Phelan originally joined the Herald Express from the Plymouth Evening Herald, where he had been deputy editor.  He started his career as a reporter at the Tavistock Times.
