South Coast title to help 100 young people to find work

A local newspaper in Sussex is aiming to help boost the job market through the launch of an apprenticeship scheme.

The Worthing Herald series has joined the ranks of other newspapers across the country to take part in the 100 apprenticeships in 100 days scheme which has seen them go a step further by taking on their own marketing apprentice.

The scheme was launched in line with National Apprenticeship Week, which began on Monday, and saw the Herald publish an eight-page pull-out.

Neill Barston, Business editor of the Herald and Gazette series said: “With youth unemployment nationally being at a near 20 year high, we believed this is a vital issue to support our area with.

The Worthing Herald has launched its 100 in 100 campaign

“We are looking forward to teaming up with Northbrook College and seeing the 100 in 100 campaign across our series make a genuine difference in helping young people gain a valuable foot on their respective career ladders.”

The campaign has already been backed by children and families minister Tim Loughton and Worthing West MP Sir Peter Bottomley, as well as the business community in the area.

It is hoped that the campaign will help create jobs for young people in the area.

Other newspapers that have taken part in the initiative include the Bristol Evening Post, the Southwark News and The Journal in Newcastle.

Wow, how innovative this also marks the 18 month anniversary for the 100 in 100 apprenticeships campaign that Bethan Phillips did for the Southampton Daily Echo. Worthing, always one step ahead!

Our campaign makes no claim to be the first to have tried 100 in 100 – indeed our sister papers in Portsmouth and Eastbourne have been successful with it previously. But I believe we are probably among the first to actively link the campaign to employing an apprentice within our own newspaper series. I don’t believe anyone could argue there is not a strong, ongoing need to support young people on the issue of unemployment and we have already had some great feedback from it.
