Reporters felt the heat in fire walking challenge

Two regional journalists proved they had fire in their bellies when they walked over hot coals to raise funds for charity.

Worcester News reporters Sarah Taylor and Liz Sweetman took part in the charity fire walk to raise funds for Worcestershire’s Sight Concern, which provides support, information and services to people affected by loss of vision.

The challenge saw then hot foot it down a 25 foot track of red hot embers at the University of Worcester after a two-hour seminar to prepare them for their ‘ordeal’.

Said Liz: “When I first told people I had signed up to do the fire walk challenge for Sight Concern, most people thought I was joking. I signed up for it for two main reasons – I didn’t know when I would get the opportunity again, and secondly to prove to myself that I could.”

The hot coals were more than three times the temperature required to burn the flesh off their feet.

Added Liz: “When we arrived at the university two hour seminar I started to get a little bit nervous, but by the time we walked outside I was raring to go.

“The sight of flames caused butterflies but I was determined to go through with it. Watching Sarah go before me gave me the confident I needed and before I knew it, I was over the coals. It was a brilliant experience – and I’m really happy I got to take part in it.”

The pair have raised around £300 between them so far.

Said Sarah: “I had always wanted to do fire walking and I am glad to have had the chance to tick it off my list as well as raise money for a great cause.

“The first nerves for me crept in during the day but when we got to it I just wanted to get on there and do it. I didn’t take it in while it was happening and I think Liz and myself would have loved to do it again after the first time. I would definitely recommend others to have a go.”
