Regionals go head-to-head in production awards

Photographers from two regional newspapers face competition from national titles at the 2012 Newspaper Awards, which celebrate excellence in news media production.

The shortlist has been announced and will see Simon Hulme from the Yorkshire Post and John Kent from the Bristol Evening Post pitted against national newspaper photographers including The Sunday Times’ Paul Conroy and The Guardian’s Tom Jenkins in the News Photograph of the Year category.

The Regional Newspaper of the Year award has been split into two categories for the first time based on circulation.

Included in the over 25,000 section are six titles including the Bristol Evening Post, Eastern Daily Press and the Liverpool Echo. Amongst those in the under 25,000 section are the Ipswich Evening Star, the Dorset Echo and the Cambridge News.

Fighting it out for weekly newspaper of the year are titles including The Cumberland News, Wakefield Express, and The Oxford Times.

The Newspaper Awards features 19 categories designed to showcase the best in both printed and digital media. All the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday 25 April at the London Hilton.

Gary Cullum, director of the awards, said: “This year has seen a tremendous level of entry to the awards both in terms of quality and quantity, and that’s great to see in such a tough year for the industry.”
