A series of paid-for newspaper apps for smartphones and tablets are being launched by three regional publishing groups.
Northcliffe Media, Newsquest and Archant are releasing apps for iPad and iPhone ranging from £2.99 to £9.99 for a one-month subscription.
The Newsquest and Archant apps are already available from Apple’s Newsstand portal with Northcliffe Media’s due to come on stream shortly.
All three publishers have used PageSuite’ Dynamic Apps technology to create the products.
Archant is charging £9.99 for apps of its four daily titles the Eastern Daily Press, Ipswich Star, Norwich Evening News and East Anglian Daily Times.
It has also launched apps for some of its weekly titles and its series of ‘Life’ magazines.
Newsquest has launched five apps, with prices ranging from £2.99 to £4.99 for a month’s subscription.
Northcliffe is trialling an app for its Swansea daily the South Wales Evening Post, which will be initially available on a free 14-day trial before going on sale at £6.99 a month.
PageSuite says it is now seeing over 150,000 app downloads per week across all territories and client brands.
Managing director Ross Murphy said: “Newsstand subscriptions allow publishers to automatically push their content to each device, with some titles seeing an average of over 25 minutes viewing time in the iOS Apps.
“This is great to see local media getting traction on the platform.”
I’m sure it’s worth a go, but would you pay for an app if the websites are readily available and more importantly, free ?

The Sutton Guardian app is free. Try it out, Dave.

If the app is free how does it raise revenue for the Sutton Guardian and if it doesn’t raise revenue what’s the point?
