Regional daily marks event with puppet theatre

The Liverpool Echo marked a public art extravaganza in the city by producing a Victorian puppet show video to tell the story of the event.

Sea Odyssey, a three-day event inspired by the sinking of the Titanic 100 years ago last month, took place last weekend.

The public art event was based on a real story about a girl whose father sailed away on the doomed vessel.

As well as in-paper and online coverage the Echo took up the period theme by telling the story of the event by means of a puppet-style video which can be viewed on its website.

The Echo also produced an eight page souvenir supplement, and will be printing four pages of user generated photographs in today’s edition.

Around 25,000 people joined a Cover it Live live blog running throughout to allow people to follow the event minute by minute

Neil Macdonald, head of web and data development for Trinity Mirror North West, said: “We always knew Sea Odyssey was going to be a big weekend for Liverpool and we’d planned to throw everything at it in terms of coverage.

“We also thought we could so something different, something innovative and come up with a new way of covering the story. And, with help from our design team, that’s how we came up with the idea of the shadow-puppet theatre.”
