Newspaper team prove they are fit for 2012

Journalists at a weekly newspaper will mark the Olympic year by covering a total of 2,012km – both on foot and in water.

The Bath Chronicle team will be running, swimming, walking, rowing and exercising the distance, equivalent to 1,250 miles, as part of the national Gold Challenge, organised in support of the London games.

Three members of the eight-strong challenge team are running the Bath Half Marathon in March, and are already clocking up the distances in training for the race.

The team includes editor Sam Holliday, 47, who will be walking and swimming.

Said Sam: “I am there to make everyone else look good. I will be happy to chalk up the 12k and they can share the other 2,000kms between them.

He added: “During the course of the year we will be urging our readers to truly capture the Olympic spirit and so it seemed only right that we should set an example ourselves.”

The challenge will see deputy editor and news editor Paul Wiltshire, 48, clocking up his miles by training for the Bath Half Marathon and for the Chippenham Half Marathon later in the year.

Assistant editor and chief sub-editor Graham Holburn, 50, is also in training for the Bath Half Marathon, along with business editor and rugby writer Tom Bradshaw, 32.

Crime and education reporter Siobhan Prideaux, 26, goes to the gym and will be doing some running, and news reporter Felicity Crump, 25, goes to the gym three times a week, does kettlebell sessions and will be running.

Health reporter Laura Tremelling, 26, swims twice a week and cycles some weekends, and Thisisbath digital publisher Steve Pope, 51, who rows competitively, will do some cycling and running.

The Chronicle team will be deciding later in the year which charity to fundraise for with its efforts.

The challenge aims to inspire people of all ages and ability to play sport and raise money for charity.
