Newspaper marks milestone with ‘Brewers Scoop’

A Lancashire newspaper has had sausages and a real ale created in its honour to celebrate 125 years as a bi-weekly publication.

The Burnley Express is also celebrating the milestone year with 12 special souvenir supplements, a range of features, flashbacks and a dedicated 125 online platform.

Staff at the Johnston Press title also came up with the idea of holding an in-company competition to name a beer in recognition of the milestone year.

Express reporter Hannah Ramsden’s entry ‘Brewer’s Scoop’ was named the winner.

Express reporter Hannah Ramsden, Moorhouse's MD David Grant, Express editor Chris Daggett and reporter Dominic Collis at the launch of 'Brewer's Scoop' in Burnley.

The cask ale, created by the town’s award-winning Moorhouse’s brewery, complete with its own pump clips is now on sale throughout the town.

Burnley butcher George Heys also created a special peppery sausage in honour of the Express called ‘Hot off the Press’ which is flying off the counter.

Editor Chris Daggett said: “We wanted to come up with something just a little bit different to mark this milestone year and having our very own beer and sausages fitted the bill.”

No wonder you are a dying breed. I think it’s great.

It is a headline not the name of the brand.
Nobody going in to buy it will make the connection between the beer and the anniversary. Brewer’s scoop does not scream what it should.

Perhaps they should, continuing Dying Breed’s footie analogy, have linked in with Burnley FC and called it Claret and Booze. Just a thought.
