New editor appointed for Bucks weeklies

A new editor has been appointed to oversee three Johnston Press-owned weeklies in Buckinghamshire.

Roger Hawes, pictured, moves from the family-owned Berkshire Media Group and will have responsibility for the Bucks Herald, Bucks Advertiser and Thame Gazette newspapers.

Born in Aylesbury, Roger has lived in the area for more than 40 years.

His appointment was announced in a story published this week on the papers’ websites.

Said Roger:  “I have been a weekly newspaper editor for 20 years and to join my local paper, the Bucks Herald, is a privilege.

“I am hugely excited about my appointment as it now means I live, work and play locally.

“Papers like the Bucks Herald are really important for communities like ours so I will continue to build on its excellent reputation for local news coverage.

“There is great team of reporters here bringing you the latest news both in print and online.”

Great pity the Herald’s circulation has been steadily falling and there were staff cuts and other economies to increase all that decline in standards.

It’s great to hear the paper where I trained and became a senior reporter will now be led by a ‘local’! Staff cuts a few years ago made it really hard work, but it’s a great patch and one I’ll remember. I only left in 2010 and I’m already nostalgic by the looks of it, but I really wish Roger and the team good luck for the future!
