Former Tindle editors in hyperlocal site launches

A company which set up two hyperlocal websites is launching two more portals to be headed by former editors of a Tindle-owned weekly.

MyTown Media, which created the MyWelshpool and MyNewtown hyperlocal websites in Wales, will launch two new sites today for Brecon and Radnor in a move which will see it provide almost blanket coverage of the county of Powys.

The sites will be led by two former editors of the Tindle Newspapers-owned Brecon and Radnor Express, with Dave Meacham leading the Brecon operation and Mike Sivier fronting the Radnor site.

The expansion by the company was accelerated when it won funding from innovation foundation Nesta, which awarded grants to 10 schemes with the aim of kickstarting hyperlocal media projects.

David Williams, co-founder of MyTown Media, said: “The funds have enabled us to set up the new sites along with developing location-aware apps on both Android and iOS. This will allow geographically-relevant content to be viewed on mobile phones.

“We will continue to work around the clock to deliver the latest news and sport and of course it will always be delivered for free.”

He added the company also had plans for more sites to be launched.

The websites have a combined total of more than 5,500 followers on Twitter and Facebook.

Nesta programme director Jon Kingsbury said: “The strength and diversity of the projects chosen shows how exciting the hyperlocal media sector is. There is a real desire for these organisations not only to be innovative but sustainable so that we lay the foundations for a hyperlocal media sector.”
