Former news chief sets up ‘pay-as-you-go’ PR firm

A former editorial manager who led 15 titles across Scotland has founded a “pay-as-you-go” PR company.

Tom McConigley, a former news chief at Clyde and Forth Media, has set up PR for Higher which aims to provide the publicity which businesses want, without them being tied in to long-term contracts.

The company claims to be the only pay-as-you-go PR firm in the UK, aiming to attract businesses who cannot afford to sign up to PR agencies with no guarantee of publicity.

Tom started out at Clyde and Forth Media as a reporter on the Clydebank Post, rising through the ranks in the company to become editor of the Greenock Telegraph and eventually editorial manager at Clyde and Forth Media in 2010, a position he left last year.

On the new company’s website, Tom said: “I established PR for Higher after recognising that many small and medium sized businesses needed to grow, but had to invest wisely.

“I’m all about the results. I have previously worked as a managing editor looking after multiple publications with a total of 500,000 readers. I understand how to match the right message to the right audience.”

Under his editorship, the Greenock Telegraph won the National Federation of Retail Newsagents’ regional newspaper of the year award in 2006.

PR for Higher? I suspect this will always look more like a spelling error than wordplay.

Cumbria Tourism launched its own bespoke PR service at least 18 months ago, offering a PR service to small and medium sized companies who could not afford big London rates and retainers. They could buy a certain number of days a month, or pay for one off press releases or other options.
This is still running. Sound similar PR for Higher?

This is just not new or news.
I started my own PR business two years ago in response to being made redundant. Research showed that while some clients are happy and feel secure with contracts others can’t and won’t pay monthly retainers.
I am about to employ my first member of staff and the business continues to grow.
No one can guarantee column inches it’s an insult to my former newspaper colleagues you just have to work hard to deliver good quality stories and charge accordingly
