Teenager nominated for human rights reporting award

A student with hopes of a career in journalism has been nominated for a national competition to find the Young Human Rights Reporter of the Year.

The Amnesty International award encourages young people to investigate what is going on in the world and bring human rights abuses to light.

Charlotte Tamplin, 18, who studies creative media at Central Sussex College’s Crawley was nominated for a 500 word article she wrote  on human rights abuses in West Papua, a little-known province of Indonesia, after seeing a poster in a local shop by chance.

Said Charlotte: “West Papua is a topic which is very much ‘off the beaten track’ in terms of public awareness, and it’s certainly not a topic which affects me in my day-to-day life.

“Once I started to do my research, I realised the extent of the situation, and felt absolutely compelled to highlight it – with this competition the ideal platform.”

Charlotte will now have to wait until later this month to find out if she will be chosen as one of three finalists to attend the Amnesty International UK Media Awards ceremony on 19 May where the winner will be announced.
