Regional publisher could axe well-known children’s comic

A regional publisher is considering axing a children’s comic it has published for the last 75 years, amid falling circulations.

The Dandy could be closed by DC Thomson, which also publishes newspapers including The Courier, as part of a review of its magazine business to respond to changes in the publishing industry.

In a statement, the publisher said: “Throughout 2012, DC Thomson is continuing to develop its magazines operation and portfolio to create an efficient business model that will build on the strength of our existing brands and products.

“There are many challenges within the industry at present, but we’re excited that the digital revolution has also given us an opportunity to innovate and develop.

“We’re celebrating the fact that The Dandy has been in print for 75 years and we’ve a lot of planning to do to ensure that our brands and characters can live on in other platforms for future generations to enjoy.”

The Dandy is thought to be the UK’s oldest children’s comic, having been published since 1937, and its best known character is Desperate Dan.

It’s a sad day – especially as the current incarnation is brilliant. And if you haven’t seen it, well, this is a good time to go out and buy it. Pretend it’s for a child, but go on, have a chuckle.
