West Wales weekly axes editions

A weekly newspaper in West Wales has announced it is axeing separate editions for outlying areas of its patch.

The Northcliffe-owned Carmarthen Journal will no longer be producing regional editions for Cardigan and Lampeter, it confirmed in this week’s paper.

It said that editions for these areas ceased last week because of falling readership in these areas.

Journal editor Cathryn Ings told HTFP that no jobs would be lost as a result and that the number of pages for remaining editions would increase.

Said Cathryn: “It was a very difficult decision to make but sadly we had no choice in the current difficult economic climate.

“We will now be concentrating our resources in the county of Carmarthenshire.”

“Our readers will still have plenty of county news, features, community news and the Welsh page which I hope will still be of interest,” she added.

The Journal will still continue to cover many of the areas that were included in the old Teifi/Lampeter editions, for example Pencader, Newcastle Emlyn, Cwmann and Llanybydder.
