Solider’s story told in journalist’s book

A Scottish writer and journalist has written a book telling the story of a World War Two soldier.

Roger Hutchinson, a former journalist at West Highland Free Press in Sky, has written The Silent Weaver: The Extraordinary Life of Angus MacPhee

The book is about South Uist man Angus MacPhee who returned from the Second World War at the age of 24 in chronic mental pain and spent the next 50 years of his life in hospital.

Roger is still a columnist for the WHFP, and has written for BBC Radio, The Scotsman, The Guardian, The Herald and The Literary Review.

His book The Soap Man was shortlisted for the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year in 2004 and the bestselling Calum’s Road (2007) was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize. The book is published by Birlinn, www.birlinn.co.uk.
