Search for best young journalists is launched

Some of the best young journalists across the UK are set to be recognised as an annual contest is launched.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists has opened its Awards for Excellence for student and trainee journalists.

Now in their fourth year, the awards recognise the achievements of students on NCTJ-accredited courses and trainee journalists working toward the NCE, who have less than two years’ experience.

The five categories, which each have an award for students and trainees, are News Journalism, Sports Journalism, Top Scoop/Exclusive, Features of the Year and Images of the Year.

There is also the chance to submit nominations for the NCTJ Chairman’s Award which will be given in praise of an individual’s outstanding contribution to high standards of journalism training.

Entries can be submitted in video, audio or written formats and the deadline is 16 September.

Tutors and editors may enter on behalf of their students and trainees and work must have been produced between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011.

The awards will all be presented at the Society of Editors’ Conference on 14 November, apart from the Chairman’s Award – which will be presented at the Journalism Skills Conference on 30 November.
