Newspaper’s 16-page show of support for team

A daily newspaper in Wales has kick-started coverage of its team’s Premier League matches with a series of page wraps in line with each game played by Swansea City FC.

The series of special editions in the South Wales Evening Post started on Monday with a 16-page wrap for the team’s first match against Manchester City.

Editor Spencer Feeney said: “We plan to produce 20 of these wraps during the season when the Swans play all of the top Premier clubs.

“But the second of them will be next Saturday, when the opponents at the club’s Liberty Stadium in Swansea will be Wigan Athletic.

“Wigan may not figure in anyone’s list of top premier clubs, but the fixture has special interest because Wigan is managed by Roberto Martinez, the man who is credited with being the catalyst for the Swans’ rise through the leagues during his time as manager of the club from 2007 to 2009.”

Featured in the 16-page wrap around this week, which had ‘Time to Prove Them All Wrong’ as its front page headline, was an interview with former player Terry Phelan and a series of reports, including a fans’ view  on pages two and three.

It also included an interview with Vic Gomersall, a former player who began his playing career at Manchester City before moving to Swansea Town in 1966 and spent six years with the club, helping them win promotion to the Third Division in 1970.

The special editions aim to celebrate Swansea being the first Welsh team to land a spot in the premier league. They lost 4-0 to Manchester City in Monday night’s game.
