Newspaper aims for first-class social media presence

Readers will be able to submit content to a weekly newspaper as it happens via a new  improved iPhone application.

The app launched by Johnston Press title the Chorley and Leyland Guardian is available to download on the iPhone App Store after the newspaper joined forced with leading app developer Concept4 to improve it.

Now readers will be able to use it submit stories and photos straight to the Guardian.

Editor of the 140 year-old paper Chris Maguire said: “People’s thirst for news never changes but how they read it does.

“We need to make sure that our newspaper, website, app and presence in social media channels is first class. We have to be relevant to our readers.

“Now that we’re on the App Store, we are even easier to download. Concept4 has done a great job.”

The Guardian has also linked up with the influential Palace Shield Cricket League so that a weekly cricket column by Chris is published on their website.

If The Cap Fits takes a wry look at the world of local cricket.

Added Chris: “The Palace Shield website has had more than 500,000 hits so it’s a great way of reaching new audiences.”

Why would people give stories away to a commercial publication? Anyone interested in citizen journalism would likely tweet or have a blog. This ruse isn’t going to fill the cracks left by JP’s cuts.
