Decision on future of Kent titles expected next month

The decision on whether five weekly newspapers in Kent will be merged will be revealed in the New Year.

Earlier this month we reported that five Northcliffe Media titles looked set to fall victim to the collapse of the company’s bid to sell its newspapers in Kent to rival the KM Group.

The Medway News and East Kent Gazette were axed in November as a result of the failed bid which occurred as a result of the Office of Fair Trading effectively blocking the deal.

It was later revealed that a further knock-on effect could see the merger of the Canterbury Times, the Faversham Times, the Herne Bay and Whitstable Times, the Thanet Gazette and the Isle of Thanet Times.

The news was revealed on Twitter by John Nurden, editor of the Canterbury Times and Herne Bay and Whitstable Times.

A spokesperson for Northcliffe Media said: “A decision on the five titles will be made in January.”
