Complaint against newspaper over CCTV images

A shopkeeper complained after a regional newspaper used CCTV footage taken from his shop on its website.

In his complaint to the Press Complaints Commission against the Evening Express in Aberdeen, Leslie Kilminster complained through solicitors that the newspaper had used video footage of a man who had entered his shop after suffering as violent assault, without his permission.

Mr Kilminster said he had allowed the reporter to view the footage but had not given consent for its publication.

His complaint was based on the Evening Express’ use of footage from the video on its website. He did not complain about still images that had been used in the newspaper.

The newspaper did not accept that it had breached the Editors Code of practice through using the footage.

However, the matter was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of a statement in the paper to clarify the situation.

It read: “Mr Leslie Kilminster of L&M Kilminster Stores, Hutcheon Street, Aberdeen has asked us to point out that he was not aware the CCTV footage taken in his shop after the incident would be made available on the Evening Express website.

“We are happy to clarify the matter and regret any confusion that may have been caused.”
